perdow news

This page is an archive of newsposts in the "perdow" newsgroup because the ingame news archive only reaches a few months back. It might not always be up to date, but newsposts should be copied over here before they fall out of the archive in the mud itself.

Throughout the six worlds, countless men and women find
themselves outcasts, shunned by the society in which they live,
banished, fleeing, or being allowed to wander away unwanted.
Changelings, most especially, and to a limited extent, other half-
breeds, may often find themselves born into situations where
they may be uncared for, or even despised. Somehow, sooner or
later, they all find their way to Perdow.
Catering to these masses, a man named Tarkus has
established a camp on Perdow, where refugees of all varieties
may find sanctuary from their troubles. He is aided in his
endeavor by another man, named Temogi. Tarkus, reputed to be
a great warrior, protects the camp from outside attack, while his
assistant, Temogi, looks after the medical needs of the refugees.
The camp is poor and rundown, and filth, disease, and crime are
rampant, but for those who come there, it is home, which is
something no other place in the Retroverse has to offer.
Lately, however, there have been rumors of foul play, and
some have come to suspect something in the camp may be
amiss.

My apologies to those who are wearing the LKB as a badge of
honor, but. . . the Thucks have been toned down a bit. I
made a rather newbish mistake when testing
 them, but they've
been returned to their target level of ridiculous-for-a-
newbie-area danger now.

All other statements, warnings, and other messages in the area
remain as they are, but they are now a little more directed
those under the level lock.

When Drandiss was destroyed, what survivors there were, rather than
seeking shelter at Scarrowfell, generally fled to the wilderness,
seeking to start new lives among the camps and smaller villages.
Many were killed.

Recently, however, rumors have begun to fly on Perdow, whispers about
old enemies resurfacing, and strange, unnatural things among the
shadows. Whether there is any truth to this or not, it has led more
and more people to flee to the walls of Scarrowfell, seeking the
protection of the Highlord.

The Highlord's representatives, upon seeing this sudden rush of
immigrants, established a task force to clean up the streets, in
order to help make room for the newcomers. The city's criminal
element however (a.k.a. the general populace), fearing that the
commission to "clean up the streets" might amount to more than dirt
and garbage, promptly had the members of the force killed and their
bodies disposed of, and the city is now, if anything, even filthier
than ever, as more and more prospective citizens wander through the
gates every day.

One notable change, however, occurred shortly thereafter, as the
First Bank of Perdow on Dixe Street suddenly heightened its security
drastically, going from a friendly bank to a veritable fortress
overnight. Local thieves speculate with greedy eyes over what manner
of new treasures might have found their way into the vault in order
to spur this sudden tightening of their defenses. Could it be that
there is finally something there worth stealing? So far, however, no
one has survived an attempt to find out.

(Scarrowfell has seen some adjustments and cleanup. Send all reps
regarding it to me!)

With the recent activity in Scarrowfell, Cepheus the Master Discordian
has decided to take its job a lot more seriously as mentor and protector of
the secrets of Chaos Magic. Infiltrators with ill intent be warned.

The Scarrowfell Magic Shop has had it's supply
of blank scrolls increased..

One usually doesn't think of a weapon shop and an armor shop as being
in competition, perhaps something more of a happy partnership. There
comes a time, however, when an adventurer walks down Yubad Alley with
only a finite amount of gold to spend and thinks, 'Should I buy some
better armor today, or a new weapon instead?'

In a fit of activity to make sure the gold ends up in their own
pockets, Lara and Malk, the weapon and armor shopkeepers of
Scarrowfell respectively, have been hard at work (as anyone examining
their spoil heap may have noticed) preparing a whole new line of gear
with which to tempt the indecisive customer. Supplies of each new
item are limited, so be the first one to check things out, before
there's nothing left to see!

In other Scarrowfell news, the new shop on Drume Street has finally
opened for business, and a new barrage of obnoxious sounds and worse
smells has flooded the street out front. . .

Sword cane and makeup kit updated so they cannot be
drawn/opened while wielded.

Sorry, Ryoshun.
-Kereth

The kizanki magister was carrying slightly too few gems for his power and
status. This has been corrected.

-Kereth Midknight

The kizanki overlords were also carrying too few gems for their power and
status. This has been corrected.

-Kereth Midknight

The value of the kizanki magister's gems, because of their being garnets,
was distinctly sub-par for his power. The quality of those garnets has been
adjusted to compensate, so his rewards should be normal in the future.

-Kereth Midknight

The same is now true of the kizanki overlord.

-Kereth Midknight

The short whips obtained in a certain area on Perdow should now be specced
more appropriately for the individuals who wield them.

-Kereth Midknight

Similar adjustments have been made to the gems held by the patrollers,
supervisors and miners in the same region.

This should be all for that area.

-Kereth Midknight

The weather should now appear correctly in the room descriptions of outdoor
rooms on Perdow.

Let me know if there are any problems or if any locations on the planet
(world map or in areas) are showing messages where they should not.

-Kereth Midknight

Many irregularities in the indoor/outdoor settings on Perdow have been
ironed out. Tunnel, caves, bottoms of lakes and so forth should now all
properly count as being outdoors, but without sky messages visible in their
descriptions. At present, such areas continue to allow one to "look sky" to
see the sky, as per similar issues on most of crypt and related areas
(other than some tunnels in the retroverse that are marked as "indoors" and
thus block related skills).

-Kereth Midknight

I have archived the temple of madness. The area had been out of the game
for a long time, so you shouldn't notice anything as a result. However, in
the unlikely event you were chesting a newbie weapon from the area, please
notify me, and I'll see what I can do to get it back (don't change the
contents of the chest until then, if you really want the item).

-Kereth Midknight

Khor's special has been cleaned up a bit, and his rich uncle has been
murdered.

-Kereth Midknight

Khor has shared his latest inheritance with the other werewolves in his
pack.

-Kereth Midknight

Another iteration of the chain web was found and removed, preventing
another possibility for the trangression of multiverse cell integrity.

Furthermore, it should actually be possible to peer down in the chain web
to see what's below you, and actually see what's below you, without being
shown the main level of the web and having to climb down and find out for
oneself what's really down there.

-Kereth Midknight

The amulet of corruption should now have a weight more befitting its
slots/bulk.

-Kereth Midknight

The spiked leather upper armor should be targettable by a wider variety of
options, rather than the small set of mostly counterintuitive valid targets
it previously had. New (previously invalid) options include "armor" "upper
armor" "leather armor" "spiked armor" and "spiked upper armor."

-Kereth Midknight

Various monsters on the Perdow overworld have had their physiologies and
humanoid/nonhumanoid status cleaned up to better match their descriptions.
Animals should now be animals, unless they're insects, and various
nonhumanoids should no longer be humanoid.

-Kereth Midknight

Trees are heavy. They are heavy because they are big. A metal banded tree
is heavier than a non-metal banded tree. A tree small enough to be wielded
by a titan in one hand, however, is not THAT big, and a tree magically
resized to the size of a human's one-handed club, even with some bands of
metal wrapped around it, would not weigh 75 kgs (~165 lbs), even if the
tree was made out of lead.

The uprooted oak tree should now have a weight more appropriate to a
spiked, banded, hardwood club that the description indicates that it is.
Needless to say, the change may be a bit drastic.

-Kereth Midknight

Thucking sticks had been made unchestable. This was for several reasons:

1. They were one of the last weapons made before the "stick to the weight
docs" mandate got handed down back in 2008.
2. They were coded before weapons retained their size over boot.
3. They are really huge by default.

In short, it was feared that if somebody chested them, they might not be
able to get them out of the chest again next boot.

Since two of those have changed, I've changed the third as well (Their
weight has been corrected), and they should now be chestable.

-Kereth Midknight

So hey, when you people kill Hope, and she does the dispel HW/banish combo,
please mail me the logs, because there should always be enough time to df
and leave the room before she'll banish after dispelling HW

Poltergeist's racial home location (help rhome) should be a bit quieter and
less likely to be threatening upon their sudden return.

-Kereth Midknight

Those who have proven their worth to Natas need not prove their worth again
just to approach him. Passing the greater test is henceforth sufficient to
forever clear the lesser trial as well.

-Kereth Midknight

Recent assaults on warrenhome have given hope to the captives there, and
the fear of their masters' retribution has lessened. Long have they been
threatened that if they do not fight in the defense of their captors,
severe punishments will await them. Yet now, they begin to wonder if,
perhaps, staying their hands and risking eventual punishment might not,
just maybe, eventually yield them the freedom they so desire.

Those who seek to bring justice to the wicked slavers there may now do so
with less a risk of bringing death to their slaves as well.

Guests in the warrens, meanwhile, have seen how the wind has been blowing.
Many visitors to the warrens, those not explicitly being paid to do so, may
be hesitant to risk laying down their lives for their hosts, choosing
instead to look out for their own and letting others deal with their own
problems. This is, of course, other than those invaders that cannot be
expected to stop…

-Kereth Midknight

The skeletons in Flor's Outpost are now skeletons.

-Kereth Midknight

Bandit pouches are now actual containers.

-Kereth Midknight

The green blinder should now have a weight more befitting its slots/bulk.

-Kereth Midknight

The cloth robes should now have a weight more befitting their slots/bulk.

-Kereth Midknight

The core amulet should now have a weight more befitting its slots/bulk.

-Kereth Midknight

Woundhealer should now count as a named weapon for effects that care about
such.

-Kereth Midknight

The templar espalliers can now be targetted by their full name.

-Kereth Midknight

Due to an unusual code arrangment I've come to recognize as "old Perdow
stuff," corpse eaters were coded to be nonhumanoid but then made humanoid
right afterward. The prior seems to be the actual intent and the code has
been adjusted to match. Corpse eaters should no longer count as humanoids.

-Kereth Midknight

The rocky clearing, i.e. the rune-warded grove, has been archived. The
area, such as it was, was just a five room, unfinished guildhall for an
unfinished guild that most players didn't know how to access. It was
protected by a gathering of eqless mobs who were immune to all but 1.6
dtypes, had several bugs and had descriptions out-of-tune with the tenor of
the game or even the surrounding terrain on Perdow, to name just a few of
its lovelier features.

Those objecting to the removal of the area can address concerns or blame to
me. I will entertain the possibility of introducing a mob called "a rock"
to some other location for those who still want the LKB.

-Kereth Midknight

Dead goblins (the food item sometimes found on Perdow) should now have an
appropriate weight and nutritional value.

-Kereth Midknight

The 7th Holy Scripture is a named weapon. Code that deals with weapon names
will now treat it as such.

-Kereth Midknight

The small sausages sold in the Scarrowfell pub (you know which one I mean)
had an appropriate price for their level of nutrition, but just to be
thorough, they've had their nutritional value (and price) updated to match
their weight. The description of the sausages has been updated slightly to
make it clearer that they are being served raw.

-Kereth Midknight

A few minor tweaks have been made on Perdow, including:

The "sexy teddy" now has a weight more befitting its
slots/bulk/description.
The treasure room in the bandit camp should no longer report the chest
(physically an item in the room) as being among the lookable objects
available in the description (the description from either way of looking at
the chest was the same).

-Kereth Midknight

Some stuff has been fixed on Perdow. Mostly a hundred or so typos in the
bandit place. Noteworthy stuff includes:

The 5th Holy Scripture should act like a named weapon for checks that care
about such.
The lion cloak and the gold gloves shoud no longer spawn at size 0.

-Kereth Midknight

The sikkarian guantlets has had their weight updated to better reflect
their slots/bulk.

-Kereth Midknight

The gear shield had its weight set to be appropriate for being size 240, to
compensate for the fact that shield weights weren't changing based on size.
It's weight has now been adjusted so that it should be close to what it was
at 240 before the change, rather than now having the old weight become the
new size 72 weight.

-Kereth Midknight

A few shops in Scarrowfell have made slight extensions to their inventory.
The general store will now carry empty vials, and Midlin's Magic will now
carry rings of daybreak.

-Kereth Midknight

The cackle backed eel is now actually an eel.

-Kereth Midknight

A major Perdow pickaxe manufacturer has undergone severe budget cuts. From
henceforth, the pickaxes they once made out of magically condensed uranium
will only be made out of ordinary uranium.

-Kereth Midknight

Agrom, the mist dagger, should now count as a named weapon for checks that
care about such.

-Kereth Midknight

Slittan, the obsidian dagger, should now count as a named weapon for checks
that care about such.

Simply standing near a strange tower on Perdow should no longer be enough
to take shelter from the elements in the future. You have to actually go
inside.

-Kereth Midknight

Placing certain things in certain other things in a certain cave on Perdow
should now give more helpful messages if using the wrong syntax.

-Kereth Midknight

Effective at boot, a certain underground cavern on Perdow will have its map
color changed from black on black to the more readable hi_gray.

-Rita "Can you see me now?" Wildfire

The spiked collar should now have a name. Messages that referred to the
collar as "Unknown name" should no longer do so.

-Kereth Midknight

The Chovihani do not have leaders, in the traditional sense. What they have
are more like celebrities: free spirited mystics whose deeds and renown (or
infamy) have set them apart from the rest.

Whispers have passed of late amongst the caravans throughout the six
worlds, telling tales of a young wagonmistress who has begun building quite
a reputation indeed…

-Kereth Midknight

At boot, the Chovihani guild will recognize that it is on Perdow.

-Kereth Midknight

Scarrowfell petshop pet items were returning false messages sometimes when
moving them around, claiming they were successfully picked up or given,
even when they weren't. This should now be corrected.

-Kereth Midknight

With Lara and Malk showing greater concern over what sort of goods they are
willing to buy, a new niche market has opened up on Perdow. Taking
advantage of this opportunity, a self-declared
"merchant-of-questionable-renown" (whatever that means) has opened up shop
in a nearby alleyway, providing a market for the less elite customers.

-Kereth Midknight

A certain pipe in the asylum should no longer be immune to repop magic.

-Rita

A new level quest is in game. One of Scarrowfell's shady denizens is
looking for adventurers to do his dirty work.

It should no longer be possible to use the ring of elemental command to
have more than one minion/pet/jabberwocky. Change effective at boot.

-Rita

Rita wrote:

This should have gone to Raji, not Perdow. My bad.

Exiting a certain tunnel on Perdow should now leave you at the same place
you entered it from.

-Kereth Midknight

The refugee camp has gotten a slight cleanup, clearing away the results of
some of my ignorance about area design and balance from my early days. A
few mobs* that had their difficulty artificially inflated should no longer
have it so, for example, a shop keeper will be less spammy, and remort
races should not be appearing in inappropriate places.

-Kereth Midknight

*This does not include the thucks.

Players not physically in leech-infested waters should no longer get
covered by leeches.

-Kereth Midknight

Potato farmers on Perdow suffered greatly due to adverse growing
conditions. That was their story, anyway. Others said they were filling
potato skins with rocks and mud, then keeping the potato flesh for
themselves. Whether the result of new agricultural practices, though, or
just realizing how inefficient their scam was, recent crops have been
showing vast improvements.

Potatoes from Perdow no longer weigh a full kilogram apiece while providing
the nutrition of half that weight of raw potatoes grown elsewhere.

-Kereth Midknight

It should no longer be necessary to target the chaotic binding as "Chaotic
Binding" (note capitals) when interacting with it by its full name. Just
"chaotic binding" will suffice.

-Kereth Midknight

The gummy brains found on Perdow should hopefully have a more realistic
nutritional value. How true this is varies with the ambiguous nature of the
product. Estimates are given that it is 100 grams of "gummy" product, but
it is noted that the item technically registers as "uncooked carrion" …

-Kereth Midknight

It should no longer be possible to aggro the otherwise unaggroable chaos
bandit apprentices by wielding weapons in front of them.

-Kereth Midknight

Animal masters in stonehelm should have the correct amount of gems for
their level, etc.

-Kereth Midknight

I'm not entirely sure if these monsters are actually in game. I suspect
they're not. Just in case, though, the animate dwarven battleaxes in
Stonehelm should give the appropriate number of gems and related items when
destroyed.

-Kereth Midknight

Jreast Dwarven Battleragers in stonehelm should have the correct amount of
gems and related items for their level, etc.

-Kereth Midknight

The bandit raiders area has yet another huge pile of typos cleaned up
(including seven instances of the word 'teh' and dozens of pluralization
and article selection issues). It should now also display full areacheck
info.

-Kereth Midknight

The abandoned mine should also have up-to-date areacheck data.

-Kereth Midknight

Alienist Tower should also have up-to-date areacheck data.

-Kereth Midknight

Asylum should now also have up-to-date areacheck data.

-Kereth Midknight

The black marsh, the chain-web and the cutthroat guild should now all also
have up-to-date areacheck data.

-Kereth Midknight

The danowyr outpost and dream tower should now also have up-to-date
areacheck data. If anybody knows who coded Call of the Pack (A.K.A. A Path
into the Hills A.K.A. Flynd Pass), please let me know, as the coder is
still unlisted, and they didn't sign anything as far as I can find.

-Kereth Midknight

The graveyard, the bat caves and Cerulean's Cove should now all also have
up-to-date areacheck data.

Thank you for all your responses regarding the original coder for the Call
of the Pack (A.K.A. all that other stuff). Between all the highly variable
feedback, it's been narrowed down to a list of four wizards. I should be
able to eliminate some of these possibilities with some personal inquiries.

If anybody else has further information or evidence to provide, feel free
to still come forward.

-Kereth Midknight

Akan's Labyrinth and Call of the Pack (presumed after inquiries to be coded
by Montezuma) should now also have up-to-date areacheck data.

If anybody recognizes any of the following monster names and can provide
information about them (Are they in game? Were they in game? Were they
supposed to be in game in the future? Where? Other details about them you
remember?), please let me know. The following are only a sample:

Dingmaul
Dungavenhooter
Gumberoo
Hodag
Hugag
Roperite
Hoop Snake
Rumtifusel
Santer
Snoligoster
Squink
Wampus Cat
Whintosser

-Kereth Midknight

Cult of the Star, Warrenhome and Myth Dranxor should now have up-to-date
areacheck data.

-Kereth Midknight

The Werewood, the Newbie Village and the Neverglades should now all also
have up-to-date areacheck data.

-Kereth Midknight

The Tiran, Tanglewood, Chaos Bandit and Abandoned manse areas should now
all also have up-to-date areacheck data. With this, all Perdow areas should
have current areacheck data.

-Kereth Midknight

Players should no longer accidentally fall between loose floorboards in a
certain place while flying. Those who want to get through on purpose (such
as those who always fly) should still be able to manage it.

-Kereth Midknight

Galithis is now more obviously a changeling.

-Kereth Midknight

Kaeseluk's luck drain special had a bug that was setting your luck based
off of your current luck, but not excluding the amount of luck added by
armor/spells/etc. This means that if you had enough luck gear on, you
could actually -gain- luck instead of losing it, since it would in effect
add the armor/spell/etc luck again each time your luck got drained.

Kaeseluk has been sent back to monster school, where he spent several
remedial courses learning that not all numbers must go higher.

-Rita

Many naturally forming caverns in the gemcaves area were not properly
registering as such. This should now be corrected.

-Kereth Midknight

Some equipment on Lashay has been updated to reflect his new outlook.. you
will have to go and get the eq to inspect the changes..

he maybe more of a challenge as while updateing him I fixed some minor
things that actualy made him work.. You have been warned

Lashay has cracked some of the mud off of his pants, they are now more
flexible and usable.

This should take effect as of his next kill or the first unchesting of the
ones gotten last evening.

Sorry for the inconvenience.. It will probably happen a few more times

—Mr Grumpy the typo master.. Lightfoot

Lashay has shacken off the cobwebs of his old life.. he is no longer the
Mindless follower of A-shug.. be warned he is now his own vampire.. not
some undead minion.

Soothe the beast should no longer work on him. Be warned.. some of his
resistances and immunities have changed cause of this..

-Lightfoot awaits your feedback

The bastard swords sometimes found on Perdow should have more detailed
descriptions and a more comprehensive list of possible target ids.

-Kereth Midknight

The back-and-breast upper armor found on Perdow should be much easier to
target in the future. It should also have a less typoed description, be
more protective, and have a value in shops that better reflects its actual
quality.

-Kereth Midknight

A certain hidden exit in a certain hidden, higher level area (which I won't
bother specifying here, since the boss isn't even listed in the EQDB, so
hey, some of you may not even know about the place), should no longer
provide a back door entrance to a guildhall for a guild that no longer
exists, rather than its current equivalent.

In addition to now leading to a real place, the way back for those who find
that exit should work properly. Several other hidden aspects of the area
should also play a little more fairly with people trying to find them,
making it more plausible to actually find the whole area, rather than just
a part.

-Kereth Midknight

It has come to my attention that the area in question isn't actually all
that hidden itself. My mistake.

That said, the extra publicity created by this confusion has proved quite
profitable for the residents of the area, who have taken this opportunity
to line their pockets rather richly through a few well placed marketing
deals.

-Kereth Midknight

The wenches found in the aforementioned area have traded away a small
portion of their newfound wealth for some nicer clothes.

-Kereth Midknight

The ice demons should now be humanoid to match their descriptions.

-Kereth Midknight

The same should now also be true of the bone demons.

-Kereth Midknight

The cubiteres sometimes found on Perdow should have a weight more befitting
their slots/bulk.

-Kereth Midknight

Certain arrows found in a certain place on Perdow were unintentionally
heavier than normal. This has been fixed.

-Kereth Midknight

The following items have received minor stat updates to comply with revised
equipment standards.

Helm of Chaos
7th Holy Scripture

~Nerina

I certain overweight templar should no longer be bribed with foods he can't
even eat. He especially won't any longer take kindly to being offered the
corpses of his friends and allies as a snack.

-Kereth Midknight

The deep caverns of Perdow should now count as natural surroundings.

-Kereth Midknight

Opening books or boxes in your inventory in Lashay's lair won't disturb
Lashay in the future.

The event unfolding after Lashay's been disturbed has been synchronized to
make both the disturber and observer's view the same, because a jumping and
yelling guy is hard to mistake for a falling corpse.

~Nerina

The following items have received minor stat updates to comply with revised
equipment standards.

Snakeskin Gloves
Human Skin Shirt

~Nerina

An infectious species of intestinal tapeworm has become more prevelant on
Perdow. Biomancers have urged caution in selecting clean, safely prepared
food and regular handwashing to avoid infection. Local Slaad populations,
meanwhile, have offered a good price for any samples of this popular treat.

-Kereth Midknight

Biomancers and druids alike have expressed concern over the continuing
spread of deadly tape worms across Perdow, being found more and more often
in the various forms of animal life to be found there. Local slaad
gourmands were interrogated on the subject, and it is believed that they
denied any involvement, although it was difficult to understand them when
their mouths were full.

-Kereth Midknight

The belt of movement should now have a weight more befitting its
slots/bulk.

-Kereth Midknight

The creepy doll from Hope should respect WIDTH settings now, hopefully. At
boot, etc.

Certain people would join with their oppressors when you tried
to rescue them.

This … wasn't correct at all.

Please, go forth and save people!

—Kellin

Some wooden arrows aren't as heavy as they used to be.

-Kereth Midknight

Araunya should no longer aggro to the effects of the Broken Mirror, nor
vice versa.

-Kereth Midknight

Rumors abound about a new shop opening in Scarrowfell. An ambitious and
business-savy artisan has begun toting a certain popular kind of wares on a
new and curious business model. Care to stop by and… try your luck?

(Shop, quest and furniture by Kereth. Most everything else by Nerina.)

A last minute addition of prize logging to the blind bags introduced a
glitch where bags that gave random wands as bonus prizes would cause the
opener to experience a sensitive mind error, preventing the delivery of the
wand but leaving the bag intact (the plushie would still be delivered and
the bag could be opened again, no logs of the opening of the bag would be
created).

Nerina has fixed the problem, and this should no longer occur. Our thanks
for the prompt reporting of the issue.

Various small patches have been made on Perdow. These include typos, the
obsidian sacrificial knife being targetable by "sacrificial knife" or
"obsidian sacrificial knife" (and no longer by "sacraficial knife" or
"obsidian sacraficial knife"), golem cores ("a large red gem") weighing
less and so forth.

-Kereth Midknight

Certain garbage pits should now actually smell like garbage.

-Kereth Midknight

Romus should now be willing to flex the rules a bit to show his gratitude
to the people who actually help him out. Those who actually help him solve
his problem will (don't tell anybody!) have a chance to purchase a second
bag if they so desire.

-Kereth Midknight

Trabbart Eldnit should now actually wield both of his weapons in combat, as
intended.

And can I just take this moment to stress that rumors about this mob have
been grossly exaggerated from what I actually said during earlier fixes?
Phrases like "super highbie boss" and "top end daggers" and similar were
never actually part of my description, nor is there some secret highbie
area on Perdow that nobody has ever found.

ktnx,
-Kereth Midknight

In celebration of over 300 blind bags sold (and totally not because we
forgot to do it originally), all plushies produced by the blind bag shop
thus far will be converted to have the first edition flag.* This flag will
continue to be applied to new plushies obtained form blind bags until
exactly** three months since the first blind bag was opened.

-Kereth Midknight

  • Allow up to 4 seconds for the tag to appear the first time. Some plushies

may not convert until next boot.
** To the nearest second, assuming the log I made is using the time zone I
thought it did, otherwise to the nearest second +/- some number of hours.
The change will be automatic and will not require a wizard to be paying
attention in order to end the first edition period.

Distant emote kissing, without an adverb or body part, will no longer bug
out if there's an Ayaka plushie in the user's inventory or in the room with
them.

~Nerina

Palos plushie no longer has the rare "General Palos plushie excaims '0'"
pull cord message.

~Nerina

The worn dagger and the ancient jeweled dagger have had their stats
upgraded slightly, in order to better match the mob that carries them.
They've also been tweaked to be a little more distinct from one another
statistically.

-Kereth Midknight

The jeweled dagger should no longer weigh 50 kgs. This was my fault. The
weight was just sliiiightly over spec, so I started to fix it, then I got
distracted fixing other things, and the 50kg weight was the result. Sorry
about that.

-Kereth Midknight

The previous post refers, of course, to the ancient jeweled dagger, not the
normal jeweled dagger, the latter of which did not weigh 50kgs unless maybe
you resized it big enough. That one will still weigh 50 kgs if you resize
it big enough, but only if you resize it big enough. The ancient jeweled
dagger did not have to be resized very big to be big enough to weigh 50
kgs. Now it does. Does that make more sense?

I'm glad.

-Kereth Midknight

The mummified hand fetish had a bug where it would claim to successfully
move to places where it couldn't go, such as into full chests or chests
that didn't allow that type of thing, the full inventory of other players,
being teleported into a tp room, etc. This has now been fixed. The
mummified hand fetish should no longer claim to go somewhere else while
actually remaining where it was the whole time.

-Kereth Midknight

Romus has received a reminder which he would like to share with the Gifted
Ones of the retroverse. Frankly, Romus has no idea what this message
actually means, no doubt due to the fact that he is unaware of the repeated
cycles of destruction and re-creation endured by the retroverse on a
regular basis, but it sounds like it might motivate people to buy more
blind bags, and that's something he's always in favor of.

The reminder goes like this:
The first edition period for blind bags will be ending "relatively
soonish."

This is just a friendly reminder and does not constitute a change in the
actual end time.

-Kereth Midknight

With the release of blindbags, it became quickly clear that the rarity
scale was a bit too steep. Players got inundated with common plushies, and
the number of bags that would need to be purchased to get a full collection
was well into the realm of the absurd. Even now, months later and with
almost a thousand bags sold, fully half of the epic level plushies have
never even been seen. This is to say nothing of the chances for someone who
wants special size modified versions.

Changing the rarity scale, however, was bound to cheapen the finds of those
who had the good fortune to get one of the oh-so-rare epic plushies. We
didn't want that. So instead, we waited. Now that the first edition period
is over, we can safely tweak the scales one (and only one, we promise)
time. Those rare epic finds are now rare epic first edition finds, and
slightly-less-absurdly rare non-first edition finds won't cheapen those.

From henceforth, the rarest plushies will be moderately less rare in the
blind bags and the common plushies at least slightly less common. Odds of
all other drops, both including chance of unusual sizes, odds of bonus
prizes and odds of bonus prizes being specific ones, remain unchanged.

-Kereth Midknight

The fierce helms found somewhere on Perdow should be less absurdly
overweight in the future.

-Kereth Midknight

Trabbart Eldnit should now qualify as an archetypal scoundrel within
necromancer cosmology.

-Kereth Midknight

A certain vault in Scarrowfell (you probaly know the one) was also
suffering from the gem bug, at least on a portion of its gems. This should
now be corrected.

-Kereth Midknight

Galithis, of the Scarrowfell general store, has heard rumors that people
need bigger things to put things in. He understands. He knows EXACTLY what
this is all about, and he promises he's got you covered. No questions
asked.

-Kereth Midknight

Blind bag gem drops were, essentially, subject to the Gem Bug(tm) or at
least a close cousin. Getting low quality gems sometimes from them in the
future as a bonus prize is not a bug, but getting only low end types was.
This has now been corrected.

-Kereth Midknight

A certain room full of sacks used to have a random number of sacks in it.
Unfortunately, at some point, the randomization got evaluated and then
saved, making the number of sacks constant and not even average for the
range that was supposed to be present. This has been corrected. The number
of sacks should be less regular in the future and should have the intended
average number.

-Kereth Midknight

The scorpion fish sometimes found on Perdow should no longer sometimes give
messages referring to them as "a food" instead of "a scorpion fish".

-Kereth Midknight

Summoned missionaries (in the missionary guild) should actually be worth
exp in the future, the better to match with general summoned mob practices
elsewhere in the MUD.

-Kereth Midknight

Exploding motes should no longer have an effect on party members on the
other side of the Retroverse.

-Kereth Midknight

While a certain prominent devil will continue to carry slippers which he
doesn't actually wear, those slippers will, at least, load at a size
greater than 0.

-Kereth Midknight

Because Romus only accepts bank transfers, making purchases via pets is not
possible, no matter how much gold the pet might carry. However, to make
this catch more explicit, an additional dialog option has been added,
clarifying the limits to your summon's purchasing power.

-Kereth Midknight

When Drandiss was destroyed, Perdow cartographers made a quick, simple
update to their notes, in order to account for the changes, without any
far-reaching survey to identify any other possible results of the calamity.

This is standard practice among Perdow cartographers, if only by virtue of
natural selection (mapmakers willing to travel and get first hand
confirmation for maps of Perdow tend not to survive long enough to actually
produce maps. On a related note, most surviving makers of Perdow maps live
on Wysoom and have never visited the planet at all).

Recent complaints from frustrated adventurers have, however, caused them to
reconsider the exact nature of their adjustments. If sources are to be
believed (and since no one wants to try to prove them wrong, they probably
will be), geologic activity possibly dating as far back as the loss of
Drandiss has caused a slight shift in the course of the rift along its
southern central reaches. The cartographers have updated their maps
accordingly.

-Kereth "tl;dr four rift/hill rooms aligned wrong and I fixed it" Midknight

The arm wrappings of immolation have had their weight reduced
significantly. They also should be sellable at an appropriate shop value.

The arm wrappings also came with an undocumented downside (hydrophobia).
This was not being compensated for by item power and was applied in a way
that would have created additional upkeep work upon a later transition to
DGD, so I have opted to remove it rather than attempting to rebalance and
document.
You probably never knew they did it to start with, but anyway, they will no
longer give you hydrophobia when worn.

-Kereth Midknight

Plushies should now give a unique message when you fail to drop them due to
insufficient castle space.

-Kereth Midknight

When a prediction is made around The Hag in a certain round of fortune
telling, if the target of the prediction is not able to experience the
predicted results, owing to their general nature, rather than specific
protections, the prediction can be assumed to by intended for one close to
them, thus becoming a part of that individual's future in that respect,
rather than directly. #fortunetelling #nospoilers

-Kereth Midknight

The area on Perdow whose name begans with "Myth Dra" was referred to in
equally many code locations as "Myth Draxnor" and "Myth Dranxor". After a
careful review of each of the references, it seems slightly more likely
that "Dranxor" was the typo and "Draxnor" was the intended spelling. All
references have thus been adjusted to "Draxnor."

-Kereth Midknight

Politics are politics, and as much as you might like your coworkers,
sometimes their unfortunate and sudden demise in the heat of battle can
really improve your odds of snagging that next promotion. Many of the
residents of Alienist's tower certainly felt this way. As much as Alienist
might approve of their ambition, however, these habits were interfering
with normal operations in a very real way.

By Alienist's decree, the following behaviors are no longer allowed among
his minions:

1. Standing idly by as your coworkers are killed by adventurers.
2. Accidentally forgetting to exclude your coworkers from the effects of
your area attack spells.
3. Directly attacking your coworkers when they perform the activity now
forbidden under point number two.

Failure to follow these guidelines is punishable by never getting that
promotion at all.

-Kereth Midknight

Approximately thirty-nine rooms in the Myth Draxnor area were outdoors but
without an appropriate terrain type set. These should all now be corrected.
Each room should have a type set which is appropriate to its particular
description.

-Kereth Midknight

The gleaming battle axes sometimes found on Perdow should have weights more
befitting their size/weapon type (somewhat lighter than before).

-Kereth Midknight

At least some small part of the bugs with town criers have been fixed, most
especially with George, the town crier from Scarrowfell. The other town
criers will need specific patching when I can figure out where to find
them, and there's almost certainly more stuff still broken with them. Feel
free to play with them and test, if you like. Rep any findings about
specific problems to me.

-Kereth Midknight

Certain fire elementals should now actual have noticeable body heat.

-Kereth Midknight

Hope's Wrath has been updated slightly. Its special attack should now show
damage numbers and affect the wielder's dpr. Furthermore, due to a slight
math error, the special chance was a bit lower than it ought to have been.
This has been corrected.

-Kereth Midknight

Exploding motes from the 7th Holy Scripture were already affecting the
wielder's dpr, but they weren't displaying the numbers from the damage
being dealt. This should now be corrected.

-Kereth Midknight

The area around the Dream Tower on Perdow was missing terrain settings.
This has now been fixed. Rangers, druids and any others who might have some
concern over what, exactly, kind of outdoor room they are in should now
find their abilities responding accordingly.

-Kereth Midknight

One of the path rooms near the dreamtower was not set as being outdoors at
all, although the description suggested it should have been. This has also
been corrected, and an appropriate terrain type has been assigned.

-Kereth Midknight

A certain butler should now actually wear the clothes he's always claimed
he had.

-Kereth Midknight

The following level locks on Perdow have been adjusted (Note: If they're
not on this list, they've been missed. Minlocks are not being observed at
this time):

Asylum: 15->15 (no change)
Bandit camp: 20->30
Danowyr Outpost: 20->30
Doll mansion: 20->30
Flynd pass: 20->30
Mausoleum: 15->25
Cerulean Grove: 25->30
Monastery: 15->15 (no change)
Newbie village: 15->15 (no change)
Refugee camp: 20->30
Tanglewood: 39->45

Irregularities in level changes are due to standardizing of the lock level
more systematically against the level of mobs to be found in the area and
irregularities that previously existed the level lock/difficulty ratio
between areas.

-Kereth Midknight

In the future, Brom Bones's specials will refrain from hitting attackers
who have fled the scene.

-Nerina

Marpas has long struggled with a moral quandry. No, not the kind of moral
quandry that would stop him from robbing banks, Marpas has rather struggled
with a moral quandry regarding his pants.

You see, Marpas, the famous bank robber, likes to think of himself as an
indescriminate thief. Certainly, his training and general lifestyle reflect
this. He doesn't steal from the rich and give to the poor, nor does he
still exclusively from the good and give to the bad (himself). Instead, he
just stole from pretty much everybody. This seemed, to him, a suitably
morally bankrupt (pun intended) way to live.

Unfortunately, when he was offered a chance to purchase a pair of trousers
worthy of only a true villain, he happily took them (he didn't -buy- them,
mind you. He still had his priorities straight), but when he tried to put
them on, he found himself unable. It turned out he didn't meet the
requirements for wearing evil aligned gear.

For a while, he went naked, unsure of the best way of coping with this
situation. Should he change his ways, sacrificing some potential exploits
in the name of wearing nicer clothes?

No. He got new pants instead.

He even got his money back.

-Kereth "Marpas no longer has eq he can't wear, and he's got a couple new
items as well" Midknight

The nonstandard levellock on the bat caves has been disabled. Note that the
standard lock is above the maximum lock level and is thus offline.

-Kereth Midknight

Qyrixhyn should no longer ask for things to make a thing if he already has
the thing he was trying to make, and asking him about that thing should no
longer result in him talking about how he still needs it when he doesn't.

A certain syntax quest in a certain Eerie Forest room should be at least
slightly easier to work out in the future.

-Kereth Midknight

A certain opal and ivory ring was described as being "quite heavy for a
simple ring."

This is still true.

It should no longer be roughtly 40 times the density of osmium, however.

-Kereth Midknight

As I said in the earlier level lock update post, areas not specified on the
list have been overlooked. Bandit raiders turns out to be one of those
areas:

Bandit raiders: 25->30

P.S. If you notice other level locked (maxlocked) areas about which there
has not yet been a newspost, please report it.

Logging in to a room containing a Father Plushie in a chest before anyone
has dealt damage that boot should no longer cause the Father Plushie to
fail to load.

A certain issue with a certain Daiyu special, which issue I suspect was
caused by the precise coincidence of poison cloud procs and diminishing
summon timers, should, I hope, now be fixed, assuming that it was caused by
what I think it was, given the available data.

-Kereth "It's probably not broken anymore, maybe" Midknight

P.S. Since there's perennial confusion on this: No, I didn't code Daiyu
(Faeryll) or the assassin terts (Evanescent) or do the conversion from Hand
to assassin (Rayzam) or the subsequent assassin revamp (Evanescent). I did
do some related stuff though, which might be what people keep thinking of.

A certain old farmer, who could not be attacked by normal means, should no
longer be possible to aggro through roundabout methods, such as wielding in
his room or having negative charisma.

-Kereth Midknight

Adjustment to level locks inadvertantly broke the Bandit Raiders area.
This should now be remedied.

Wxyz

Bjorne plushies should no longer have one messed up chat option if they
spawn or are loaded in a way that is not the result of a player action
(such as castle pests loading the room they're being stored in).

-Kereth Midknight

Rakor is Not That Kind of Undead(tm). He should no longer act like it.

-Kereth Midknight

The newbie-gates on Perdow should now determine whether a given person can
enter them based on that individual's level, not the level of the person
who entered the movement command. High level parties can no longer use the
newbie transport by having a newbie lead them through it.

The outer forest area of Myth Draxnor has been updated. This includes clean
up, added detail, additional loot and some other extensions. Inner forest
and castle forthcoming.

-Nerina

Several mobs in Warrenhome were specifically coded not to carry random drop
eq, but they were carrying that eq anyway. This has been fixed.

-Kereth Midknight

The elegant black dress should have a weight more appropriate to its
slots/bulk, keeping in line with general Retroverse standards.

-Kereth Midknight

The valid target ids for black flowing chainmail should now include the
word "flowing" in various options.

-Kereth Midknight

The curved dagger made of mist can now be targetted as "curved dagger made
of mist."

-Kereth Midknight

The uncured foxtail should now be properly craftable.

The Scarrowfell zoning commission has performed an audit of the real estate
situation in the city, giving special attention to zoning violations and
tax fraud. Surviving members of the commission report several unlisted
stretches of road and multiple pieces of property outside their designated
zones. The report was reviewed extensively by numerous relevant parties,
and a plan was drawn up to correct the issues, completely reworking the
layout of the entire city.

The plan was then subsequently revised upon the input of several anxious
financial backers, resulting in more-or-less the status quo, with some
minor extensions and changes. A cadre of merchants, a few unnamed mages and
the local discordian guild then applied a version of the plan which was
probably at least pretty close to the one on paper, each becoming somehow
wealthier in the process. All discrepancies were heartily approved of by
local entrepreneurs.

An itererant cartographer was then kidnapped, chained to a desk and
compelled to revise the local maps at no pay, in order to reflect the
changes. The cartographer has not been heard from since.

tl;dr Layout changes in Scarrowfell. New map and some new rooms.

Marlene has opened a new establishment in Scarrowfell.

-Nerina

The Myth Draxnor inner forest has been cleaned up and updated. There may or
may not be new content involved.
